(UEFI) Dell XPS 15z L511z modded BIOS - and HOWTO
(12-25-2011, 04:03 PM)jkbuha Wrote: NOTE: THE ATTACHED FILES ARE FOR THE XPS 15Z (L511Z) ONLY!

Thank you for your generous donations to help replace kasar's motherboard - it has been much appreciated by all the team!

Latest News

UPDATE 20/09/2014: Added new experimental ROM with the following changes:
- Updated Intel VBIOS to latest version v2170 (vanilla); full support for all L511z ports
- Updated Intel Microcode to latest version 0x29; works perfect on Win7/8.1/OSX
- Replaced PXE Boot Manager with the excellent PLOP v5.0 Boot Manager (thanks for the tip @Florin9doi)

Cheers
jkbuha

Thanks for the update. Keep it coming if I may say so Big Grin

Thanks - very kind Smile

Not sure what else to include really. VBIOS, Microcode or PLOP haven't been updated since the last release, and I'm quite happy with the level of support we have on the BIOS at the moment. What we *really* need are as follows:

i) Method to unlock the multiplier (even if just for single cores)
ii) Method to update the ME to v8.x (to support IVB CPUs)

Any other suggestions?

For those of you who have modified FSB (using pinmod or unlocked ME) using Nvidia-Optimus, could you check if you're seeing this issue (forced x1 multiplier on PEG):

http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=522

If so, we may be able to solve this using the unlocked BIOS options in the PEG menu. Let me know if you have experienced this, and if you have been successful in fixing it.

Props to @egygmr for pointing me to it.

mmm, I think it was fine since I were gaming a lot after using modded ME + bclk OC

need to check anyway, but I will take some days because I still waiting the replacement motherboard from aliexpress.

my L502X motherboard died due some static electricity while handling it last time.

Hi all - been a while since I've posted here as I've been focussing on a few other projects.

That said, something new to report. The Memory Configuration options in the unlocked BIOS work a treat. I've flashed new SPD timings on the DDR3 ram (using the paid version of Thaip***n) and successfully clocked the previous 1333 modules to 1600MHz. BIOS/OS and Benchmarks all validate the increase in speed (which is quite remarkable btw). Note of caution - you can brick the modules with incorrect SPD timings, but if you boot with a working RAM module and insert the faulty module whilst the OS is running, you can safely restore the working SPD settings.

Interesting now to see if I can clock vanilla 1333MHz modules to 1867 or better Smile

Quick update - not only does the 16GB (unbranded) RAM clock to 1867MHz 9-9-9-24, but also run at 1.25V instead of 1.5V. Power consumption on idle is reduced by a further 20ma. Which is nice.

Also - a new ME FW 7.1.80.1214 is out for the Dell motherboards. Flashed, all working well.

No updated Nvidia or Intel vbios though, unless anyone has updated FW, in which case let me know.

I wonder if it would be possible to create a final rom that rounds up the improvements since the latest release?

Yeah, that would be great. Because I'm so busy these days and can't afford to implement all of these things myself.
Also after the last release of moded bios by CaptainKasar two things went wrong:
1. OSx sleep fix doesn't work anymore
2. Bios powershare for usb2 port is not working anymore.

Thanks for your efforts
