gateway LX-6810
#21
Take a Victory Lap Bios-Mods.com and Campog!

Score:
Bios Rebels 3
Gateway Boot-Lockers 0 (Goose-egg)

Yes, It worked.  I used Campog's flash, deleting the first .ROM file and using the second one, as Lekim did.  That file with P02 in the name, already matched my existing BIOS as far as I could tell.  So, I took the leap of faith, ran it, and BAM!  AHCI/RAID/SATA options in BIOS.  I think "SATA" in this case just means IDE.  I ran the BIOS flash through Windows - no issues.

Problems cured:  This all started when my Windows 10 upgrade bombed after over a week of use.  Win10 stopped recognizing my old HDD hard drive for restart/upgrade (after I went back to my Win7 image), and even Win10 ISO file clean install.  Now I realize, this was simply the new Windows not having the NForce RAID driver.

After those problems I started scheming and dreaming.  Why can't I have an SSD, like all those happy computer geeks?  So, I got me a nice price on an 850EVO on Amazon, flashed by BIOS while waiting for UPS man and then recently got on the superhighway with AHCI mode and SSD.

But, it's not all roses.  This Gateway seems to only have SATAII ports.  Probably not a big deal.  The real drawback is the one Campog pointed to - slow boot.  I dug into this issue (obsessed), and figured out that the Gateway MOBO in AHCI mode does fine detecting used SATA ports, but takes just over a minute to read the first empty port and move on.

I also tried Fernando's Win-RAID forum nForce drivers for my AHCI.  But, surprisingly the default Microsoft driver was about 20% faster.  I also tried going back to IDE mode on SSD.  That sure cured the slow boot problem, but losses on SSD performance were not acceptable, at all.

Well, sorry about the long post.  But, I'm sure owners of this machine looking to go SSD can use this info.  And of all posts on the WW "Internets", this one is the only success I've seen.

A sincere Thanks! to the forum and posters!  I'm very happy with my LX performance now, even if minutes of my life are being burned (one at a time during boot).

Is there any chance of a BIOS mode or other method to disable empty SATA Ports?  I'm convinced this is the slow boot cure I am looking for.  This BIOS as it stands, sure doesn't give you the option to disable ports.

Hi there! I know it's been years since anyone has been back on this topic. But recently decided to throw in an SSD into my LX-6810 and also noticed not being able to switch to AHCI from RAID. Is there any chance you would still have the bios update? I've tried the links in this forum and they're all gone. This is my best shot. searched the [censored] out of google and this was the only forum that had a solution to this Gateway problem. It's so frustrating. Hope you get this message and Thank you in advance!
