well, investited further as I have another win10 system with 4gb (E8500, G41) which shows 4GB available,
It is about different amount of reserved RAM for IO, different amounts depending on hardware/bios.

and more about memory holes here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_hole#U...ble_memory

Hey guys, I’m gonna try flashing the bios on a hp dx-2300, I already have the bios file (in a .ROM format), but what bios flashing tool will accept the .ROM file? Motherboard is a MSI MS-7336

Great to hear about this.  I have an older dx2300 which I was looking to upgrade and it looks like the q6600 I have has a new home waiting for it.  Cool

a little late to the party...

I recently inherited a dx2300, and one of the first things I did was to increase the onboard aperture from 64mb to maximum, and I noticed the available memory drop that you did. Lots of issues with graphics in windows 10 requiring custom drivers which occasionally default back to stock windows (thank you, windows 10) requiring reinstall.

I then inherited an old PCIexpress graphics card, slotted it in, and everythings plain sailing... except the option to reduce the graphics aperture has vanished. From this I surmise that it only appears if you don't have a PCI express graphics card installed... so you can't reduce the aperture and free up RAM unless you remove the card.

6 screws and a poorly seated PCI express card that requires fiddling to get working are disincentive enough for me to accept only having 3.25GB RAM to play old games with...

I'm also late to the party, well actually I've had this motherboard for a long time just recently dug it out again.

I'm still looking for modded BIOS, unlocking hidden settings hopefully, I hope it can enable 36bit pae and allow 4gb ram (now only 3.25 usable) and maybe multiplier.

Latest bios is 1.14 still available from HP in .exe format and can be found with 7zip exploring the file.
or I can dump .rom on request if any bios modder comes into the thread and wants to have a look Smile
