Vaio VGN-AR840e - Phoenix R2090J8 - 02/26/2008
#1
Looking to update/upgrade my Sony Vaio laptop's BIOS. Need to enable Hardware Virtualization for VMware, and would like to have additional options. Sony-provided BIOS for this laptop is extremely limited. VMware in Linux requires BIOS setting enabling Hardware Virtualization.

Not to be naive, but I have no idea how to locate my BIOS bin file. I have disabled RAID mirroring, replaced the 2 hard drives with 500GB WD Black SATA drives, and installed Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit installed (came with XP, not even Service Pack 1), and Ultimate Linux 2.9 64-bit edition (derivative of Ubuntu). So, if it were originally on the computer, it has long since been lost.

I had searched on the Sony Support website:

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-lis...VGN-AR840E

However, there is no BIOS file posted. The laptop is at home, so I cannot perform any CLI commands on it during this day. It would have to be tonight or over the weekend since I would have access to the computer then.

I appreciate any help you can provide, and am actually pretty competent technologically compared to most users. Just do not have the experience, and thus the skills, that you and others on this form have with regard to modifying computers' BIOS.

Thanks,

Richard

Please advise as to how I can procure the BIOS bin files so that I can share it with you. Is there a way to extract the BIOS files from the PC with any Windows/Linux applications/utilities?

Thank you Ahmed. I will do so as soon as I get home, before sundown tonight. Does this utility work pretty straight forward, or should I find instructions somewhere?

I am working on an Apple computer at my office currently, without MS Windows or linux.

Thanks again, and I truly appreciate your help.

you are welcome here Smile

this tool reads your bios then back it up and save the backup in file ( eg , bios .ROM )
just disable UAC in win7 OR vista and run the tool.
then make sure the tool reads your bios size ( 1MB , 2MB .......etc ) and don`t adjust it manually .
click READ then after it completes reading the bios ( 100% ) click backup and save the file then upload it .

the new file will have .ROM extension which will make you only able to flash the file from dos ( i don`t knew if the flash utility will accept the .ROM file but if not , flash it from dos )

i`m waiting you to update the file Smile

Ahmed:

Home. Booted up Vaio into Windows 7, disabled UAC, rebooted, started Universal BIOS Backup utility, received this message:

Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate
permissions to access the item.

Only option is to hit the OK button or close the Windows error box by clicking on X within red box in upper corner of box.

Any idea why this is happening? What I can do?
