Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L and Xeon
#1
I just did a mod that lets you install an LGA 771 Xeon cpu in an LGA 775 motherboard, and the mod worked, and I can boot into windows, but some functionality like speedstep, SSE 4.1, and VT-X is missing when I look at the output on cpuz. I think it's because the microcode isn't present for the Xeon cpu, and it's using some kind of generic settings.

Does anyone know of a way to mod the bios on my system to properly support this cpu?

Here are the system specs:
Motherboard: Gigabyte P35-DS3L version 1 (uses an Award bios)
Processor: Xeon E5440 (SLBBJ revision E0)

Link to bios: http://download.gigabyte.us/FileList/BIO...s3l_f9.exe
Link to motherboard page: http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2599&dl=#ov

I can't take a screenshot of aida64 because the computer's at my parent's house, but here's someone else's screenshot that has the same cpu:

The main difference is that my cpuz screenshot is missing SSE4.1 and VT-X. And as I mentioned above, speedstep was also not working.

I'm in the process of adding Xeon E5440 (SLBBJ revision E0) support to my gigabyte P35-DS3L (version 1) motherboard, and I've pretty much figured out how to update the microcode from this guide: http://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-Ho...-Microcode .

The only thing I'm unsure of is which donor bios to extract the e5440 microcode from. Can you just extract it from any Award bios that supports the e5440, or does it have to be from a motherboard that's similar to mine?

Here, this may help link, just scroll down, since you have an award bios.

OK , here goes .....

I have discovered that it isn't possible to keep all the existing CPU microcode - the size of this file appears to be limited. When i added all of the micro codes for CPU support combined from both BIOSes , the microcodes were not detected correctly.

As a result, this new BIOS ONLY contains the Socket 771 microcodes and NONE of the Socket 775 microcodes.

If you choose to flash this BIOS , you do so at your own risk. Please see the below screenshot for a "Before and After" comparison of the relevant CPU Microcodes (Extracted from an Asus DSEB-DG motherboard which supports lots of Xeon CPU's included the E5440)

Hello all!

This is my first post here so just wanna say Hi to all and ask if somebody did test this modded bios wit LGA771 CPU? Have same motherboard and Xeon E5310 processor but if will somthing ghet wrong then with no support from LGA775 CPU the MB will be nothing more then a brick. Now im using standard E2160 Pentium Dual Core.

Any chances for a standard bios with support of Intel E5310 1.60 GHz/8M/1066 CPU only?

F9 BIOS for GA-P35-DS3L (rev.2.0)
http://download.gigabyte.eu/FileList/BIO...s3l_f9.exe

Need insertion of Xeon E5450 SLANQ (C0 stepping) processor.
http://ark.intel.com/products/33083/Inte...33-MHz-FSB

On good instruction, tried opening BIOS file from MMTool, but it doesn't see bios file (F9 extension), and if I try rename to ROM and opening it just reply with error loading ROM image.

@1234s282

If you shrink Gigabyte logo picture, will there be enough space for both microcodes?
Or can you delete Celeron microcodes and put Xeon instead of them?

@KosiMazaki

It doesn't work that way.

If you put 771 CPU in that board, it will boot, but it will not have access to Speedstep, SSE 4.1 and virtualization.

So original BIOS + Xeon CPU = boot, but stuck at max speed, no throttle, so you will have high power draw and heat even when you don't need it.

Modded BIOS + Xeon CPU = full utilization.

But logic, you can also flash modded bios, and run 775 CPU, but again, it will not recognize it as it should, so it wouldn't work to its full potential.

@astmario

Thank you for nice explenation. When I find some extra free time will test it if this work wit orginal bios. Next step will be flash with modded one. Like the idea with removing the logo and add more cpu microcodes to bios but dont have right skills and tools to do it Sad.

Hi all. This is my first post and my English is so so. Usually, I speek French. So don't laugh on it.

Well.

I am trying to make any of my motherboards (ASUS P5K SE, ASUS P5W DH Deluxe, ASUS P5Q Deluxe and GIGABYTE GA-EP31 DS3L, GIGABYTE GA-EP43 UD3L) to run with XEON E54xx series and X54xx series but it is hard to find correct microcode for each of them.

The URL you give above is very interesting. I have got the microcodes for GA-EP31 DS3L and GA-EP43 UD3L, but as you tell, it is in chineese and I don't know how to write them down to my systems.

My first question: How to write them to my BIOS ?

The second question : Is there same website which list the microcodes for all ASUS motherboards?

Big regards to all.
