Toshiba Portege Z830 / Z835 Bios Unlock
#1
Hi All,

I would like to request to unlock the bios of the new Toshiba Portege Z830 / Z835 ultrabook. I am newbie so my apologies.

Questions:
1) Does this Bios limit the SATA speed to SATA II (3 gbps)?
2) If it limits the speed to SATA II, is it possible to unlock the menu where it can be set to SATA III? (6 gbps)
3) Is there a limit how much memory (RAM) can be installed?
4) If there is a limit, can this limit be removed? (max RAM)
5) This is the initial bios for this laptop, what would happen if an updated bios is released?

The bios can be found here

ACPI Flash BIOS version 1.30 for Portege Z830/Z835 (PT224U/PT225U)

Anyone?
I noticed above that the R830 has a different bios. Can somebody take a look at it and determine whether Z830 / Z835 is Phoenix? If not Phoenix then this should be moved to the correct area.

Hi MZ/X ,

Sata 3 and Sata 6GB is hard ware issue and can`t be fixed by bios modifications .
Also , The ram issue is hardware related as well .

The bios can`t be extracted from exe as its found in a .COM file inside the exe .

Hi Ahmed,
Thank you for your reply.
The reason why I asked the Sata 3 is because Toshiba intentionally limits in the R830 the Sata speed to 2 while the chipset can handle sata 3. In the Z830 / Z835 again Toshiba uses its own SSD at SATA 2 speeds while the chipset would allow the higher speed.

What do you mean by the ram is hardware related?

I found an iso image of the package. Can you check it whether it includes the bios in extractable format? Please see attached .rar file

Again, thank you for your help.

I'm sorry for my late replies Smile
The ram capacity is determined with the motherboard design ,,,,,,,, it can be 2GB , 4GB or anything else .
So the bios is not the problem with the ram issue .
I don't knew why toshiba puts the speed in sata2 while the chipset can handle sata3 ,,,,,,,,,,, have you tried another SSD drive to see if its the same !
Sure i don't mean to buy a new SSD but for example borrow one from a friend and try it .
I don't knew how to set the speed to sata3 but i guess its a hardware related issue as well .
I will look into the iso later as I'm using mobile now .
Thank you

Thank you for checking it.
Sata 3 issue - The reason why Toshiba sets the speed to Sata 2 is because Toshiba only makes Sata 2 SSDs. This laptop is really similar to the R830 where Toshiba did confirm that Sata speed is reduced in the bios. Unfortunately I do not have an option to test the Sata speed at this stage.

Regarding the RAM. What should I look for that determines how much RAM it can take? (Or the limit) The motherboard has 2GB soldered and an empty slot. Toshiba's specs sheet claims it can take only 6GB which is 2GB (on board) + 4GB (in the slot. We know that there are 8GB modules which would give 10GB total. That is why I asked whether there is a way to see it in the bios.

Ahmed, please take your time and when you have a chance take a look at it.

Many thanks,
mz/x

I am afraid you are out of luck for BIOS mod. Toshiba Z830 BIOS sould be similar to R830, and there is no solution yet. I am working on my R830, but no success yet.

SATA III is realy limited by BIOS, and I believe someone will find the solution.
As for 8GB stick, this will not work on Z830. Intel QM67 chipset is cappable for 16GB, but CPU's on Z830 is not! For example i5-2557M on Z830 is limited to 8GB MAX, while i5-2520M on R830 is cappacle for 16GB.

Do you think that if one puts in an 8GB module next to the 2GB it will recognize it? I mean, it will recognize 2GB + 6GB (out of the 8GB module).

Now we just have to figure it out whether Ahmed will have any luck to see the SATA III in the bios.

I don't know, I am not expert, sorry.

I assume while chipset like QM67 has enough RAM address lines, this module should work. But CPU will not use all of them, so you will be limited to 8GB it total.

Again, I am only assume

Hi,

I have bought a second hand Toshiba Z830 with an i5 2nd Gen and Intel grahics 3000.

I have two issues :
The fan is very loud and the graphic card memory is only set to 32 mb while I am sure it can be increased in Bios, however it is locked.

Can anybody show me how to unlock it please?

it is currently in version 1.80 which is the latest.

Your help would be awesome.
