Insyde H20 bios gateway nv7915U
#21
Well I got the thread notification so well done TheWiz, makes life a little easier.

John, your EFI BIOS probably gives you squat options but is 4MB big lol, makes me wonder what they do with all that space.

For overclocking was there something specific or just overall? I guess your looking for more than just OC'ing the CPU through BCLK. For instance my own EFI BIOS has disabled menu options for RAM timing. Enabling the menu gives the option but doesn't actually do anything and enabling disabled options without proper support could possibly cause other problems, worse being bricking the machine but probably just doing nothing. Just so your aware. Wink

If you have a spare 5mins would you be able to dump the BIOS via RwEverything using a start address of FFC00000 and an end address of FFFFFFFF. That should give you a 4MB file which you could then check against your Flashit dump using the cmd line in windows "FC /B backup.fd MFFC0000.bin >diff.txt". The only differences in diff.txt, if any, should be in the NV store section. If it's too much bother though no problem. Smile

How were you trying to open the BIOS before and how were you hoping to patch it?

If you successfully backed up with flashit then how big was the file "backup.fd" or whatever you called it?.

You could post or PM a link of your BIOS backup if you wish, but be aware that it will probably contain the serial numbers of your machine / disk drives, and I'll take a look at it for you.

What are you hoping to achieve by modding the BIOS?

Thanks TheWiz for fixing subscribed threads.

hummmm.... mine came out to be 4 megs
ill redo it now and pm it to you or send you a link to it.
im looking to unlock the over clocking. if i can't..this laptop goes up for sale.

thewiz:
thanks, because that's why it's taking me so long to get back...i have to remember to come here...lol

edit:
ok, it read at 1 meg, but there are no options listed just some serial information and something about on board vga, but no options for changing.

Sounds like Johnksss resigned and has probably sold the laptop. Anyway, if someone else should come across this thread some time later I would like to add the following. I never got to look at Johnksss's BIOS but I did find 1.05 posted for the NV79 Gateway. The BIOS size is 4MB. Too many options to post as text but I'll post those options that might be relevant to overclocking as that was of interest to the OP. Of course, seeing the options in the setup does not guarantee they will work if enabled, but hopefully a least some will. Wink

Okay, some time ago a guy called Marcan made some super python scripts for dumping the setup so here's one of those dumps of the above for those interested.

but now im on a new project. asus g73jh...does this script idea work on that bios?

Resigned as in resigned to not finding a solution for the Gateway BIOS. Wink Yes, it's an Insyde job and although there didn't seem to be a download at that time, one can now be found here.

I'm taking the NV79 BIOS as being generic across all NV79 models, if it's not then perhaps it's not the proper BIOS for your sold laptop.

Don't know about your new Asus but generally hear good things about Asus notebooks. Might get myself one when the time comes to renew, but for now stuck with Core 2 Duo for a year or 2 more I think.

thats not why...my download sections looks nothing like that. how exactly did you get there?
and more importantly...can you make changes to the bios?

ahh, nevermind..i see your link now...lol

[censored], no wonder...that's in AU. and the us site looks completely different.

I haven't played with Insyde in a looong... time. I think the only way to say you can make changes to a BIOS firmware is to actually have successfully done it. Until that time it's an unknown. AFAIK 1234s282 is looking into Insyde BIOS modding but it seems a moot point now that you have sold your Gateway.

Yeah, those Gateway sites give you different results depending on which country you select.

Is your Email thread subscription notification working? Mine seems to have stopped.

Notification has been working for my threads. I haven't really editied the scripts for putting code on the board, but if you had some suggestions on PHP based stuff I'd look into it.
