HP MCP61PM-HM (Nettle3) 5.17 With Unlocked Overclocking Options
I tried it couple of days ago with the latest flashrom from subversion, chip was recognized, backup went good, but writing was impossible. But I used just flashrom -w bios.rom. Obviously the difference is in using that -f switch.
There`s one more reason why I was hoping for hearing from topicarticwolf, because he did it on rev 2.1 and you have 2.2. Maybe that doesn`t make any difference but just in case ...

Actually the -f switch should not be needed according to the good people in #flashrom on IRC. I'll let you know when I get a backup BIOS chip (its in the mail).

We're you using the latest version of flashrom? Because if you weren't thats probably why the chip was not detected. I had to use the absolute latest verison of flashrom for it to detect the chip type.

And even if it does not detect the chiptype you can force it with -c XXXX (use flashrom -L to see the list).

Hope this helps!

Sure it was the latest version, said it was from svn. Actually the chip WAS detected, but no writing allowed. In an earlier post I have pasted the flashrom output. I also went to flashrom irc, they are wery helpful indeed, but to be honest I lost my nerve somehow - u know, like the situation when somebody ignorant is messing around happily with something he doesn`t have a clue about (talking about myself) :-).

Cruising for bruising? :-)

Lost your nerve? LOL Do like I did.. I fixed my situation back to my original HP ROM, then ordered a backup BIOS chip.. so now I can play to my hearts content and not have to worry about bricking the BIOS as it wont be the end of the world Smile

Well done with flashrom -f -w bios.rom! Just like in Loki-XP's case - first run ended up with failure, but the second run: verified. Now everything is running fine with one minor glitch: one of the fans is spinning wild. Any suggestions? Thanks a lot. You've been very helpful so far.

drfr: This is a known issue if you look here in the forums, I think its the System Fan and not the CPU fan if I'm correct.. and I don't know that there is a fix currently. I'm going to try and work with Wiz and make a better BIOS for the Nettle3 motherboards.

Some things you could try:

I don't think the SYS fan is required for boot to operate, so I suggest unplugging the fan from the motherboard header and finding a power adapter to run that particular fan directly off of your power supply, I would not recommend running the system without that fan although some users say it does not impact the thermal temperature inside of the case that much.

Loki-XP, please confirm, did you say you were able to flash back to HP 5.29? With flashrom?

Yes I was able to, however verification failed first time (this seems to be a constant issue with the Nettle3 mobo), but succeeded the 2nd time. Since then I have ordered and recieved a backup BIOS chip with 5.29 reloaded, so I hope to toy around with the Nettle3 BIOS options myself (with Whiz's help) and see what comes of it Smile

Where did you get that bios chip from?
