I did some research and saw videos of it with an i7 640m pga988, and researching that pga988 I discovered other processors like i7 720qm, i7 740qm, i7 820qm, i7 840qm and i7 920xm. I'm looking to upgrade my processor and I'm not sure if I'll buy one of these and it not work.
I can't tell you whether processors higher than the i7 640m will work, because I don't know. I changed from a P6100 to an i5 460m on my own computer and it worked. Note that processors higher than i7 640m do not have a built-in igpu (if your laptop does not have a separate graphics chip, you will not have a display) and consume more power, which also means that they heat up more. I once saw a video where someone put in a better CPU than the i7 640m and it worked with an eGPU on a separate monitor, but there's no guarantee that it will work for you. It's also worth considering whether it makes sense to change the processor from an i3 380m to an i7 640m at all, because the performance gain is small. 1 MB more L3 cache and about 900 MHz more in turbo boost is not much, especially in such an old processor architecture, and the fact that it won't make much difference to today's heavy systems and programs.
