M17xR3 A08---Specific hack needed
#1
Hello all,
Ahmed Hossam has done great work with the bios mod:
http://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-Un...2#pid33052

Current unlocked bios: http://www.mediafire.com/?2vw45vmgsk2vt7l

However, I need two more things done to if (VERY specific)
1. I need the bit at MSR 0xE2 unlocked (c-state configuration)
2. 0xCE bit[28] needs to be set to 1 so the multiplier register at 0x1AD is read / write.

Thanks to anybody that can help!

I`m sorry for my late reply as i`m very busy .
I have some time today and will modify the bios for you but i have few questions :-
1 - how did you knew that the register MSR 0xE2 is for c state configuration !
2 - what is 0xCE bit[28] referring to ! i mean what will be enabled when setting this bit to 1 ................. i knew it will make the 0x1AD is read/write but where did you get this information .
also which bit will be modified in 0xE2 !
is these registers edit valid only for this bios or these are MSR registers which can be found in any bios .

Thank you .

Thank you for the response Ahmed,
1. According to unclewebb on notebookreview forum, MSR 0xE2 is responsible for package c state limit. I believe this is universal, it applies to all BIOS. Asus boards have a similar issue. MSR 0xE2 for controlling C States is well documented by Intel. Bit[15] is the lock bit.
2. Actually, forget about number 2. Intel XTU has solved this issue Smile

Ok , so for 0x1AD is valid also for all bioses and 0xCE as well
Do you mean if i unlocked these registers in any bios , then the frequency ratio option will work ! Was this the real reason for not making this option work !
I thought the reason was that code is a BSEL one and cpu will not respond except it has unlocked multiplier .

Also , has the unlocked bios got options for c state ! Or its found but not working !

The mod will be ready tomorrow of maximum in 2 days and I'm just asking as i need to do more research in this part

Thank you

No, I am unsure about 0xCE, it is not well documented....... do not attempt to unlock, it could brick the BIOS......Again, do not attempt to modify 0xCE unless you found documentation on it.

The unlocked bios has options for c-state, but not for package c-state limit. All you need to modify is MSR 0xE2. The lockbit is bit[15], which needs to be unlock. thank you for your efforts!

I have searched and found that 0X1AD is known for the turbo frequency register in some CPUs and 0XCE is the CPU platform info and should be edited to make the 0X1AD R/W .
but , was you intend to unlock the 0X1AD to be able to freely use the frequency ratio option ! Or it was just able to raise the maximum frequency for turbo mode !

Also , the 0XE2 register is for C-STATE control as you said but if you need to make no limit for C STATES , then you should modify bits 0 : 2 ....... these three bits is responsible for raising the limit ................. you can make it limit to C3 or limit to C6 or C7 or make no limit for it .
while bit 15 is responsible for locking bits from 0 to 15 till the next reset .
do you really want to only modify bit 15 OR you want to modify both bit 15 and bits 0:2 bits !
