Compaq Presario R3000, HP Pavilion zv5000, HP Compaq nx9105: 90nm CPU Support
#1
In first place let me congratulate you for this great website and all of your knowledge that are helpping many people like me.
well i have an hp pavilion zv5000 series that i bought a few years ago with a AMD Mobile Athlon 64 3000+ Clawhammer 130nm Socket 754 AMN3000BIX5AR.
One of these days i bought on ebay an Mobile Athlon 64 3400+ newwark 90nm AMN3400BKX5BU Socket 754.
As a result of my inexperience, only after that i realised that this cpu isn´t supported by the motherboard. I´ve made a search and everybody says that is because of the manufacturing process diference between 130 and 90 nm.

My question is, can we make a mod in the bios so it recognise the new cpu or there are fysical issues that make it impossible?

my laptop specs:

Laptop name: Hewlett-Packard zv5235ea
Motherboard Manufacturer: Compal
Model: 08A0

- Bios revision: F.35
- Bios Type : Phoenix
- Bios SLIC : N/A
- Bios Link = ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp30001-30500/sp30397.exe

New processor:
Mobile Athlon 64 3400+ AMN3400BKX5BU

many thanks

Sorry this has taken so long to reply to - must have missed it!

could you please post a bios download link to another phoenix bios from a similar model which supports the 3400+

hi, thanks for your interest.

I´ve found this Epox EP-8KDA3+ PRO motherboard with the folowing specs,

http://yfrog.com/afepoxj

i think they are quite similar. and here´s the link for the bios download

http://down3.driversdown.com/Bios/8k5j5902.zip

i´ve done the download and althoug in the specs they say it´s an Award/Phoenix BIOS v6.0, i couldn´t open it in phoenix bios editor because it´s a bin file.
I´ve found this other motherboard Gigabyte GA-K8VM800M, but the chipset is a VIA K8M800 and althoug it has an exclusive phoenix bios, i couldn´t also open it in phoenix bios editor.

http://download.gigabyte.eu/FileList/BIO....x)_f8.exe

i´m still looking for other options and in the meanwhile if i found something i´ll let you know.
Hope this is usefull

Many thanks

Pmjaneiro did you get this to work? I also have a HP pavilion zv5000 series (zv5410us) with the same original CPU (AMD Mobile Athlon 64 3000+ Clawhammer) and I want to upgrade it to a Mobile Athlon 64 4000+ Newark 90nm, AMN4000BKX5BU.

Anyone else have suggestions?

I was able to get my K8V SE Deluxe to work with a 3700+ Mobile Clawhammer. It originally would not post unless the CMOS was cleared and then would be stuck at 800Mhz and 1.1v for the lowest pstate. Any saves or changes to the bios trying to alter ANYTHING would then keep it from posting again until you reset the CMOS. I finally tried enabling CnQ in the BIOS and then the chip worked beautifully. It now boots at runs at full speed without any issues. It may be as simple as having the most up to date BIOS for your board and ensuring CnQ is enabled.

Hi Folks,

I would like to put in a request for a CPU support BIOS mod for the Compaq Presario r3000z. This is a laptop introduced around 2004, which used AMD Socket 754 CPUs with the nVidia nForce3 Go150 chipset. The 3000z had a very limited range of supported CPUs:
  • XP-M 3000+ (DTR 1.6GHz 256K in the Presario r3120 model)
  • Athlon 64 3200+ (DTR 2.0GHz, 512K in the Presario rR3140 model)
  • Athlon 64 3400+ (DTR 2.2GHz, 512K in the CTO model)

The Donor BIOS is an ASUS A4D, which uses the same nForce3 Go150 chipset. It supposedly supports the following:
  • AMD Mobile Athlon 64 Processor 3000+/ 3200+ /3400+/3700+
  • AMD Mobile Sempron 3000+/3100+/3300+

Original Compaq BIOS (sp30397):

Donor ASUS BIOS (A4D0206AS):

I don't know the manufacturer of the ASUS BIOS while the Compaq BIOS is from Phoenix. Thanks to anyone who can help with this!

Edit: Additional potential donor BIOS - Acer Aspire 1510 (Also uses nForce Go150). More recent than ASUS bios, but can't seem to find supported CPU list:

Hello ! I'm a noob at BIOS modding, and, just 2 minutes ago, I've tried to change my XP CPU on my Compal 08A0 motherboard. The socket of the motherboard, the old and the new CPU is 754. I've changed it, and when I tried to boot, it said "Warning! This motherboard does not support 82W CPU!". It's horrible. I've changed to a Athlon 64 2400+ I think (1.8Ghz). I think it's a BIOS problem. Can you help me ? I would be very happy to have 64 bits CPU on my computer.

Hi guys. I'm restoring this vintage Compaq from 2004 (AMD version). It has socket 754 with nForce3 chipset

It born with a renamed Socket 754 Mobile Sempron (called Athlon XP-M 2800+ AHN2800BIX2AY core Dublin).
It is simply a Mobile Sempron 2800+ SMN2800BIX3AY core Dublin... fabrication 130nm and 62W TDP
In accordance with wikipedia it works at 1,4v .

I would upgrade the cpu with a 90nm 35W TDP Turion ML-32 core "Lancaster" (it has same socket, same bus hypertransport 800MHz and same voltage).
It works at 1,35v .
I think only cpu microcode in bios is missing, because I get blank screen with it. It would must work on this architecture.

Or I would upgrade the cpu with a 90nm Mobile Sempron 3000+ SMS3000BQX2LF core "Roma" 25w TDP (it has same socket, same bus 800MHz and less voltage).
I obviously also get blank screen with it, at the moment.
In accordance with wikipedia it works at 1,2v so it would not so good to work at 1,4v .

Is it possibile, please, add microcodes of these 2 cpu in the bios I attach?

With one of them I will decrease power consumption and heat, increasing performance.

I attach the last bios version... F.35

Post a screenshot of Mainboard tab of CPU-Z with supported CPU.

Adding microcode doesn't add support for new CPUs. Updating AGESA is needed also.

Hi DeathBringer. Thank you

Yes, I now read about Agesa, I didn't know about it

I attach the CPU-Z screens.

In according with wikipedia nForce3 150 supports only HT 600MHz. So a cpu with HT 800 (Turion or Sempron) will run at 600 MHz, but it will not be a problem
