HP MCP61PM-HM (Nettle2) 5.27 With Unlocked Overclocking Options
does the 9150e work with the nettle2 5.27 mod

I thought I post my experience with this motherboard and BIOS. I ended up with one of these motherboards because a co-worker had one of these HP computers, and it was acting strangely. I checked it out, and found that it had bad capacitors. I was able to find a very similar motherboard on Newegg, and swap that in.

I decided to take a crack at recapping the Nettle board. Once I did that, I picked up a used 4200+, and put it together. Without the stock Heatsink/fan assembly, it did not want to boot (no fan error message). This and some other things were pretty annoying. Since it was so similar to the board that I used to replace it, I considered using that BIOS. But a Google search brought me here, and I tried this BIOS instead.

It worked well enough, and I ended up installing Vista on it, and giving it to my niece. She recently had a problem with it, so I got it back to check it out.

She said she had no display, but I wasn't able to replicate that. It worked fine for me, but I decided to upgrade it a little since I had it back. I installed Windows 7 64, which worked fine. You can buy DDR2 very inexpensively on Ebay right now ($15.00 with free shipping for a pair of brand new two gigabyte sticks) so I decided to do that as well. So here are the specs: four gigs of DDR2 6400 in dual channel mode, an Nvidia GT240 one gig card, and a 500 gigabyte Hitachi drive.

Here are some of the odd things I have noticed. I kept having problems with the mouse. I was using my laptop's Logitech wireless mouse, and it kept having intermittent problems. Looking in device manager the Logitech mouse appeared to be installed normally, but when I chose "View all devices", there was also a "standard PS/2 mouse" with an exclamation point by it. I was able to make this go away by going into the CMOS settings and disabling USB mouse support. This cured the mouse issues.

Even with the setting for the memory at max mem clock, the memory still ran below 400 MHz. I decided to try overclocking the 4200+. I was able to get it up to 2543 MHz, and the memory up to 424. Trying to go over 233 or 234 MHz FSB setting in the BIOS results in a halt error when booting, and if you hit F1 to continue, it boots up at stock speed.

Something about this BIOS not being a perfect match for the board results in a pretty long boot time. After you get past the BIOS screens, you get to the Starting Windows screen, and it sits there for some time with no apparent activity. Finally the windows emblem animation appears, and the hard drive activity LED lights up, and it boots into Windows. I've spent a fair amount of time changing CMOS settings to try and speed this up, but nothing helped.

It's a bit of a shame that there isn't a proper factory BIOS for this board that allows it to work at its full potential. But in my case, this BIOS, while not perfect, has allowed me to get some use out of a board that otherwise would have gone in the E waste pile.

Edit: here's something strange; I'm still having the occasional strange mouse issues (cursor moving across the screen jerkily, having a hard time clicking icons), so I decided to try attaching the USB keyboard I've been using with a PS/2 adapter. Doing this caused the boot up lag to go away! The mouse issue is continuing though. So far, the only way I've found to make this wireless USB mouse work as it should all of the time is to use a USB 2.0 PCI card, and disable the onboard USB. The strange lag issue carries over to the PCI card's USB ports unless I disable the onboard ones. When it acts up, I can sometimes temporarily fix the problem by unplugging the USB receiver, then plug it in to another port (there is a noticeable lag between unplugging it, and when you hear the tone for a disconnected USB device).

Edit2: Out of frustration, I gave up on the Logitech wireless mouse I was using, and tried a standard USB mouse, and it is working great! I've never had any issues with that Logitech mouse on any other computer I've used it with, but it doesn't like this motherboard for some reason. I swapped it with the generic USB mouse that I was using on my main computer, and the Logitech mouse is now working fine on my main computer. Maybe the Nettle board produces some sort of RF interference?

It locked up once when I opened a program last night, so I dropped the speed down to 2475 MHz, and haven't had another issue.

So, if possible, use a PS/2 keyboard, or an adapter for the PS/2 port, and use a wired mouse. Now that I'm doing those things, it's working much better.

Hey,

Thanks for the guide! I think I might have made a mistake. I have the bios now, however I do not have the overclocking option.

Please help!

I successfully flashed the BIOS on a Compaq-sourced 'MCP61PM-HM rev_1.0b' mobo. No issues whatsoever.

AHCI config doesn't appear within the BIOS settings. Shall I presume it is not supported in this BIOS? If not, is there a 'MCP61PM-HM rev_1.0b' compatible BIOS that includes AHCI support?

OK, now I need some expert advice. I have a video driver crash problem. It started about a year ago, since then I've re-flashed bios, replace memory, replaced HD, changed OS 3x, now running win7 x64 with 8Megs, changed from onboard vid to add on vid card and drivers, lapped and upgraded heat sink and fan and still have vid driver crashes and recover without need of reboot. Any ideas? Could it be internal to MB or Processor causing a driver crash? It's getting really annoying having screen digitize then black out then refresh with an error message, I don't know what to replace next short of hoping some fairy pops in and gives me a new computer
Note: I've even had linux install with same crash issues

Oh yea I still have issues with one of my usb drives, won't load to windows if drive is connected to system. Gets stuck at boot from CD prompt. Simple usb plug pull boots immediately. Is there an option to delay usb discovery until windows loads?

"Necessity isn't the Mother of Invention, The Science Fiction writer is" (Footfall-Larry Niven) Someone reads a book and says I can make that work, now we have cell phones and laptops and other things from books and movies years before they were invented. The first cell phone was designed by a tech on the beach after watching an ep of Star Trek.

sounds like bad pci controller or video card. try diffrent card see it that helps. It seems to be intermediate so check also for dust in the pci port, and that the card is firmly in place.

as for your usb, that's a conflict at boot up not much you can do. just keep it out at boot up it's for the best.
