[request] Asus ROG strix G15 2021 (g513qr) BIOS unlock
#11
Alright, have tried a few times, but the issue now is that I can't enable CSM/legacy mode in UEFI/BIOS. So I cant boot freedos. Gonna try a win10 bootdisk-tip before I give this one up Smile
EDIT: Have tried it, but no luck unfortunately.

Hello Steinar,

I was going to have you use RU.EFI to enable the hidden CSM support setting, but there seems to only be a disabled option for the setting according to the IFR text from the Setup module... I'll look more into this.

For now, let's try the simplest of flashing methods: AFUWIN

In the same ZIP file from earlier (https://www.ami.com/download/aptio-v-ami-firmware-update-utility/), navigate to afu>afuwin>64>afuwin>AfuWinq64>AfuWin64>. Run AFUWINGUIx64.EXE. In the Setup tab, check "Recovery".

Let me know how this goes, including any error codes. If neither of these two methods ultimately work, you will need to order the CH341A SPI Programmer that can directly flash the BIOS chip via hardware. It is about $11USD on Amazon. The nice bonus about having the SPI programmer around is that you can always restore a BIOS chip from a backup, even if it is completely and hopelessly bricked. That said, hopefully AFUWIN will work.

2.) Combat misinformation on social media.

Also, please feel free to PM me if I have not replied again about your BIOS mod request after 5 days.

Tried the winflash-method, but that is not working as well. Reads the rom-file, and when it reboots to ezflash, it just says that it's not a proper BIOS-file. Tested my original dump as well, and I get the same error message (if that information is worth something)

Thanks for your help and work so far.

No problem!

The fact that you get the same error message with the original BIOS makes me think that this is a BIOS version check. Old or same BIOS versions cannot be flashed. There might be a hidden setting (one similar to "BIOS lock") that is in your BIOS that can be unlocked through RU.EFI but I cannot locate which it is.

Unfortunately, what this means is that you will need to purchase the CH341A SPI Programmer with a SOIC8 clip in order to flash this BIOS mod. This will allow you to directly read from/write to most SOIC8 chips, including your BIOS chip. They are usually around $10 USD.

Here is the one I purchased: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07V6WLF4S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You can also find them on other websites.

Let me know if you want to go through with this and I will post instructions.
