Insyde BIOS Recovery

  1. ) Obtain the correct BIOS file for your system. The file extension will usually be one of the following: “.fd” “.rom” “.bin” “.wph”
2.) Please see paragraph 3 to determine what you should rename the BIOS file to.
3.) Copy the renamed BIOS file to an EMPTY USB flashdrive. If the flashdrive is not empty or is incorrectly formatted, the recovery process may fail.

4.) Disconnect the AC power adapter and, in the case of a laptop, remove the battery as well.

5.) Insert the USB flashdrive into one of the USB ports on the computer. In most cases, the particular USB port that you use will not matter. That being said, some computers are finicky and will only accept a specific USB port for recovery.

6.) With all power sources disconnected from the computer, hold down the ‘Windows’ key and the ‘B’ key. Do not release these keys until instructed to do so.

7.) Connect the AC power adapter to the computer.

8.) Press the ‘Power’ button on the computer.

9.) When the LED’s illuminate, you may release the two keys from step #6. You may notice some of the LED’s illuminating differently from how they do in normal computer operation.

10.) After about 10 seconds, the computer should start reading the flashdrive. While searching for the file system, the computer may (should) beep for one second. The number of beeps can vary based on the capacity of the flashdrive as well as the number of files on it. If the BIOS file is not found, the computer will reboot and try again.

11.) If the file is found, the computer will load it. The particular computer used in this tutorial took 12 seconds to load the BIOS file, but times can vary based on the size of the BIOS image. No beeps will be heard during this process.

12.) After the computer is finished loading the BIOS file, it will start flashing the BIOS. During this process, the computer will beep every 2 seconds. The computer used in this tutorial took about 32 seconds. About 5 seconds after the flashing process has finished, the computer will shutdown. If the recovery process was successful, then the BIOS should work normally the next time you boot up the computer.

*NOTE: Not all devices will produce beeping sounds during the recovery process. The USB flashdrive LED should still blink on and off while the computer is loading the BIOS image. If the loading process is successful, the computer should shutdown within the next minute. For larger BIOS images, this may take longer.

Hi I’ve been trying to recover my Acer Aspire 5742 due to a corrupt bios, and been following the pages for phoenix instructions (5742g uses it apparently) but stopped when I realized that mine uses Insyde. I have confirmed this by entering crisis mode to see if it would work. The newest bios for my model is 1.30, which has a KBCA230A.rom file, and a pew71x64.fd file. I seen somewhere that these merge together but am not to sure if that’s the case. I was thinking of using an earlier version but I can’t recall which version was installed before becoming corrupted. I have a USB thumbdrive but wouldn’t running a Phoenix crisis recovery tool not work on an Insyde? I’m also unsure of which file to rename. Any help would be appreciated!

    Hallo,
    I have a Lenovo IdeaPad N581, Bios InsydeH20 Rev. 3.7 – Bios Type 5ECN42WW (V4.01), 14.03.2013
My machine runs with windows 7 64bit.
I can’t access to the ADVANCED menu of the bios, so my memory is running 800Mhz instead of 1333Mhz, and I cant do other things.
    MY QUESTION:
I read everywhere “OBTAIN FIRST the correct BIOS file for your system” – but how do I do that? I downloaded the Andy Phönix/Insyde tool and run it, but it ask me for a file, so how do I obtain my original bios?
After that, I can I unlock the ADVANCED Menu and flash back the bios?
    ThX
    Best

PS: I have been reeding up on this for hours, if Im too stupid, just give me the link to the answer…

  • Hello all,
I just bricked my engineering Touchsmart M6 15.6″ with i7-4550u HD5000. The bios was B.0F, I downloaded the bios F.18 from TouchSmart M6-k125dx which is i5-4200u. The flash didn’t back up the old bios for some reasons. There is no TouchSmart M6 with i7 – 4550u anywhere. There is no working bios for me to download and restore.
The board finished flashing the bios 2048 sectors and verified… then it doesn’t reboot just power on and black screen with the wifi button red. I think the new bios doesn’t know what i7 4550u HD5000 is because it’s for i5 4200 HD4400. It was stupid of me, if anyone can help, I would compensate for your work. I ordered a motherboard from Ebay for the i5-4200u to fit into this motherboard, but the i7 – 4550u is really nice.

    Thanks,

    Louis

    Hi,
I successfully flash the bios with the crisis recovery method (Fn+R+Power).
I get the AIUU1_X64s.rom file by extracting it with 7-zip from 92cn35ww.exe downloaded from Lenovo website.
File must be renamed AIUU1_BIOS.ROM, name found with Andy’s Phoenix tool in module PcdPeim at offset 3E8. Laptop beeped during flash process (3 mn).
    Thanks for the tutorial.

Hi everybody.. how you all doing?? i have read through the entire post and done plenty of research regarding bios crash\failure\repair etc etc….

I was busy doing a bios update and then power went out while the update in was progress, or should i say it was at the end busy finalizing.
I have tried all the methods that are mentioned here and on all the other websites and have not been able to get the laptop up and running.

The symptoms are as follows: My laptop is totally dead only the power light comes on by the charger plug to show that the charger is plugged in, no other lights.
When you press the the power button with any of the key combinations still nothing.

The laptop is a HP DV6 Pavilion Entertainment pc, Model: dv6-1225ei.

Does any body have any idea of how repair this bios update failure?
I am a technician by trade and don’t believe that it cannot be repaired.

Any new methods would be appreciated.
    Thank you guys, in advance.

Hi, I’ve got a Toshiba All In One desktop machine which was bricked with Windows BIOS updating tool. I have Insyder BIOS as verified by the Phoenix tool. I can’t see what to rename the file on there? I’ve tried the original tais150.fd name and also BIOS.fd. The USB key isn’t read at all with Win + B key combo. I’ve also tried holding down B and holding down F. Since it’s a desktop and not a laptop, I don’t have a Fn key, so I can’t try the Fn + Esc combo. Would love some advise please!

  • james:

I did the first three steps and then all the 12 steps but still the same no update waited for 5 minutes on each try but nothing.
however the USB this time flashed only one time and then went off.
BTW only files on the both usb’s are
    K55A.bin
    K55A.407
I tried with the latest bios available and also the oldest bios from ASUS website
I used two usb’s one 8Gb scan Disk and the other one 8Gb Kingston
Capacity of both usb’s went to 31.8Mb after doing the Crisis recovery drive.
While inspecting and recovering the data in the laptop hard drive on another computer.
    I found these two files:
    K55.BIN
    K55VD.BIN
I will tell now how I bricked the bios.
Firstly i erased the whole hard drive by mistake.
then i accessed the bios thinking there is an option to recover the system, I clicked on “Launch EFI Shell from filesystem device” two times and nothing happened then did a restore defaults and save and exited, when the laptop restarted it was bricked.

    • I don’t know if this applies to UEFI, but with Phoenix BIOSes, CRISIS oftentimes only works with flashdrives that are 2GB and smaller.

You only had one file at a time on the flashdrive when you were flashing, right? If both BIOS files were on the flashdrive at the same time, they could have “confused” the program. CRISIS is a very simple program, since it is designed to run without even a fully functional BIOS. It has strict rules as a result. Oftentimes, due to this strict simpleness, CRISIS will only work with certain USB ports. Make sure that you try EVERY USB port.

Also, try the CRISIS recovery without holding down any keys.

  • Jim:

Hoping for some help here, have tried just about everything. Laptop powers up, LEDs and keyboard backlight flash, no other signs of life.

ASUS GL771JM, BIOS here: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/G771JM/G771JMAS201.zip. The Phoenix/Insyde tool tells me the correct filenames are G771JM.bin and G771JM.201, and indicates the bios are EFI/Insyde BIOS.

I’ve followed the directions above to no success. I’ve also tried several other key combinations. The only combo that evokes any sort of response is Ctrl-Home — the computer accesses the flash drive for several seconds, but then gives up and does nothing.

Not sure where to go from here. I’ve been trying every potential solution I can find for a couple days now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • Hello Jim,

Could you try all of the tips above in the conversation between James and I? Those may help you.

      • Jim:

Thanks for the response! I believe I’ve followed those suggestions. I made sure to exhaust every option I could find before bothering anyone else for direct help.

I’ve been using a 128MB flash drive, have tried one file at a time, and tried all ports on the computer. I’ve tried every key-combo suggestion I can find, including not pressing anything and just hoping it ran.

My only hangup with any of the instructions is when it comes to formatting with the Phoenix instructions program. When I run it, the project path input is disabled, and it tells me files are missing once I click start, and then it closes. The best I can do format-wise is just formatting it to FAT with Windows.

  • tombodude:

I really need help with an Acer ES1-512 that is bricked. There are so many instructions, I have tried endless attempts, nothing works. I have no idea what to do. When i try to find the recovery bios name using phoenixtool, I only get a popup that shows three lines, Header, pubkey, and marker, with long names and x1 and x2 marks. Makes no sense to me, I can’t find any instructions other than it should pop up your recovery bios name, but it doesn’t. The bios I am trying to use is the latest, and extracted is “53115s.FD. I have tried making a wincrisis usb stick, doesn’t do anything, tried attaching a dvd drive to it and all permutations of using just that bios on a cd, renamed to bios.wph and others, using the first four letters of it, on dvd’s, on USB sticks, trying Win key + esc, +B, Fn key + Esc, +B, on and on. Nothing works. It acts like it reads something from either media, dvd drive blinks or usb stick blinks, and then it just sits dead endlessly until I give up and shut down the power and start over. I’ve tried it with the battery unhooked, with the battery plugged in, there are so many options I am going nuts. I have recovered BIOS’s and unbricked several laptops and desktops over the years, but I have never found so many and so conflicting instructions. I can follow them well if I know what they are.

So I am asking for some explicit help. It seems like the laptop wants to load something if I can just find the correct moves. I have spent hours and hours fooling with my dead laptop!

    Thanks in advance!

  • Dan:

    Hey Guys,
Ive been reading and trying like a maniac for a salution to my problem.
My laptop was running fine, i use this as a media server and it was working fine, the laptop was on and then the lights went out, tried to power it on later on that night and no go, got a blank screen. Tried to remove the BIOS battery and nothing, removed all components, reseated them and still nothing so, i suspect is a BIOS issue as there’s no POST.
My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite C875-S7304, it was running BIOS version 6.80 (Updated when it was working from Toshiba site).

The Phoenix Tool stated that my file on the 128MB USB (formatted as FAT32) should be FX64f.? (i cannot place the question mark as the name of the file as the tool suggested.
What can i do? Thanks for the help

  • mume:

Ok, this laptop is doing my head in.
A business closed down in town here and they pulled the hdd’s out of the laptops and sold them as is along with everything else at the locale tender center in town here.
Problem with tender centers is you can’t get contact details of previous owners and stuff is sold as it, you don’t see computers and stuff actually turned on.
A bloke bought them and couldn’t get them going so he sold 1 to his mate and he gave it to us to fix.
Story goes there was a bios post when he got it, but it still had the bios password.
So he thought just boot up load windows on the new hdd and all would be fine, due to the password couldn’t get into the bios to change the boot order/settings.
I don’t know how his mind works but he loaded some boot manager program on there with a usb and now there is no post at all.
The boot manager is not showing any devices/hdd/usbs nothing. There are no boot devices listed so it was a failure.
That is the story he gave us and he is sticking to it.
We have come across a lot of problems in the past 20 years and only had 1 boat anchor.
Condition is it lights up, the green acer logo life begins here comes on the screen, there is no post showing at all not even for a second,
press any button it asks for a password, press f9 or something and you get the empty boot manager,
press enter after that and it comes up with black screen no boot device, restart.
If you press any button after that it just repeats.
Can not for the life of us get a dos prompt even.
We have tried flashing the bios, flashed the cmos, external rom, removed all power from the board for 2 hours.
So other then replacing the bios chip or the whole mb, is there anything else you guys can think of worth trying.
It is a nice computer but we are going fishing later on today, so tempted to take it with us, joking.
It is a Acer V3-771G had win 7 on it originally.

  • Bobi:

Hello guys, can some one help me? After successful install of unlocked BIOS I changed some settings from whatever to auto-select. After that my notebook showed black screen. I removed CMOS battery as I think it will load default settings but no luck. Now I am trying to recover BIOS with USB stick but again no luck so far…
Phoenixtool show that my recovery name must be “QIWG5.bi?” I tried QIWG5 and *.bin, *.bi,*.fd,*.rom,*.wph and non of them work.
USB stick flashes longer with more files than with one file, so it seems that the recovery procedure search for specific file but doesn’t find it.

Device is Lenovo G580 (20150) with BIOS 5ECN96WW(v9.01) from Insyde
    Any suggestions?

  • Bobi:

OK so it seems that the one and only viable method to recover bad bios flash/bad settings for Lenovo G580 (20150) is to flash trough programmer. But that motherboard have two chips for bios (winbond). Do anyone have experience with that operation and is willing to share knowledge how to flash the chips. If I understand correctly from I read from internet one of the chips must be embedded controller and other one for actual bios. If that is true is it enough to flash only the one that have bios with extracted .rom file? And where and how to get the data for the embedded controller? Can that be done with SPIPGM.exe programmer (http://rayer.g6.cz/elektro/spipgm.htm) and SOIC clip for onboard flash?
The thing is for that Lenovo G580 (20150) there isn’t much tutorials for bios recovery and the USB stick method doesn’t seem to work so many people will be happy to have DIY guide. Pls guys, lets do good recovery tutorial.
