MCP61PM-AM Modded BIOS Question
#1
Greetings,
I apologize for the double post but I attached this to an older thread & received no response so I started a new thread.

I have the eMachine version MCP61PM-AM. I have a 125W Athlon64 X2 6400+ waiting to install. Consesus is that the stock board will not support it (I currently have the 89W 6000+ version). Once I receive the appropriate heat sink I will attempt it. I would appreciate it if you could bear with me & answer a couple of questions:

1. Is the modded BIOS for this motherboard "abit_unlocked.bin"? If this is incorrect, could you provide a link to the appropriate mod? I was a little confused with some of the attachments in the other threads.
2. If I flash with the modded BIOS, what is the maximum processor that I would be able to use?
Would I be able to use the 125W Athlon64 X2 6400+? I see reference to Phenoms in the other thread also.
Official support limits it to the 89W 6000+ that I already have but I saw a thread in another forum where the poster dropped in a 125W 6000+ in the stock BIOS with no problems (don't know if the board was eMachines).
Sorry for the basic questions but I purchased the 6400+ chip assuming it would work but found evidence that it may not work. If flashing the BIOS would allow the 6400+ Athlon64 X2 or even a more advanced chip, I'll do it.
Thanks for reading.
Regards,
Rich

this probably wont help all that much (I'm the one that posted in your thread on another site before I figured some things out), but I have the 125w 6000+ in the same board (mcp61sm-am actually, acer's version of it). with the oem acer R0-C01 bios (newest on their site) I was able to use the 6000+ with xp pro, but NOT with vista or 7.
after using the abit-unlocked nettle2 5.27 bios, my 6000+ now works flawlessly in all OS's. that bios is perfect for this board. not sure if that will apply to your 6400+, but it would definitely be the first bios I would try with it. if it doesnt work, it shouldnt harm anything, it'll just cause crashes in the OS during bootup or earlier. or if it doesnt register properly with the bios, it'll prob give a bios error of some sort I would imagine.

I vote go for it and give it a shot, can't fry anything that I know of

Thanks for answering my post. In the time that I originally posted & now, I received the upgraded heat sink & decided to drop in the 6400+ & give it a try. Much to my surprise, the crappy OEM ECS BIOS recognized it immediately. I was so sure that it would not work that I originally just held the old heat sink on top of the processor assuming I would be removing the 6400+ immediately. It actually ran cooler than the 89W 6000+ with the old heat sink. When I installed the heat pipe heat sink, it ran cooler than the original 65W 4400+ that came with the computer.
Now I'm concerned that if I use another BIOS, I may render the 6400+ unrecognizable. So I'm thinking of purchasing a pre-flashed BIOS chip on Ebay before flashing my chip. I'd love to run a Phenom II on this economy computer.
I never heard of a BIOS causing a CPU to work with one OS but not another. It's a new one to me!
Thanks again.
