[REQUEST] Asus ROG G53JW & i7-940XM
#1
Hello together!

I actually have a problem with my ASUS G53Jw and I think (or hope?) that an unlocked BIOS might help, or that it might deliver more insight into the problem.

The laptop was originally equipped with an i7 720QM, 4GB of RAM and a GTX460M with 1,5GB VRAM.
When I purchased it, I upgraded the RAM to 16GB and everything worked fine, both Windows and the BIOS recognised the 16GB of RAM.

A few weeks ago, the graphics board failed and I ordered a new GTX460M (this time with 3GB VRAM).
My idea was, since I had to disassemble the whole laptop anyway to apply new thermal paste, clean the fans and so forth, I also wanted to upgrade to a faster CPU and thus bought an i7 940XM.

The repair went off without a hitch, Windows booted up, the new graphics was recognised right away, as well as the CPU.
I then checked the BIOS and, also here, CPU and graphics board are identified correctly.

But: The BIOS now says that only 8 GB of RAM are installed, so does Windows.

CPUID HWMonitor does not show the exact amount of RAM at all, only its utilisation.
CPUID CPU-Z, HWiNFO and AIDA64 show 16 GB of RAM and recognise each of the four slots correctly (4*4 GB, serial number, clockings, ...).

Maybe someone of you knows about this problem, or can help me with the unlocked BIOS.

Thanks in advance,
Daniel

Do Load Defaults in BIOS, save & reboot.
And make a screenshot of regedit with expanded key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System\CentralProcessor\0
Run msconfig.exe, go to tab Boot, click BOOT Advanced options button, make a screenshot.
Make TXT-report of CPU-Z.
Make a screenshot of Windows info with 8 GB.

You didn't do Load Defaults in BIOS. You CPU is still overclocked.

Check the amount of memory in BIOS and check memory mode (dual or single) in CPU-Z with these configurations:
1. SODIMMs in 1st and 2nd slots
2. SODIMMs in 3rd and 4th slots
3. SODIMMs in 1st and 3rd slots
4. SODIMMs in 2nd and 4th slots

5. SODIMMs in 1st, 2nd and 3rd slots
6. SODIMMs in 1st, 2nd and 4th slots
7. SODIMMs in 1st, 3rd and 4th slots
8. SODIMMs in 2nd, 3rd and 4th slots
BTW: Did you unplug laptop's battery when you're installing memory?

I attached a photo of my BIOS and a screenshot of CPU-Z...

The last part of your advice I didn't really understand.
Do you want me to put only RAM in the slots mentioned, meaning that I have to disassemble the whole laptop again?

Yes. And make these tests.
And do Load Defaults in BIOS!

Okay... but I will need some time to do this since holiday has ended now and I have to get back to work.
But I'll report.
How do I know which slot on the board has which number?

Yeah, sure.

You can number them by yourself.
