I've identified what I think is my BIOS chip as being a "SST25VF016B" 16 MBit SPI chip. I've looked at a few of the CH341A USB chip programmers on eBay (like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-Programmer-CH341A-Series-Burner-Chip-24-EEPROM-BIOS-LCD-Writer-25-SPI-Flash-/251932290901?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3aa855af55 ) and most say that they cannot write, only read, to the SST 25 series chips.

So instead of the CH341A based programmers I've been looking at the "EZP2010" based programmers as they seem to be able to write to the SST25 chips. See here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/new-EZP2010-High-Speed-24-25-93-W25-SST25-EEPROM-USB-SPI-Programmer-for-car-U69-/190601186331?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c60b74c1b .

I was just wondering if I would still be able to use the "SOIC8 SOP8 test clip" if I got one of the EZP2010 USB programmers? I don't have any soldering ability so the test clip really is the better option for me.

I received the SkyPro (EZP2010 Clone) USB programmer today (thanks Colin at C-U-S for the help!). Using it and the SOIC8 clip I've been able to dump my BIOS, as well as flash a much older BIOS that wasn't an option before. I'm still not able to get rid of the WLAN whitelist though. Also, flashing the older BIOS from the HP site caused a warning about a missing Serial number etc.

The original BIOS dumped from the netbook is available here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/h31cr98al6xah8...G.BIN?dl=0 . BDMaster, I'd love it if you could help disable the whitelist for me!

No problems. Here is the original HP SP file: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp57501-58000/sp57757.exe . Here is the output of the BIOS backup tool: https://www.dropbox.com/s/qkrder387pazyq...1.rom?dl=0 . Results.rar file: https://www.dropbox.com/s/8oucq1yt9748nd...s.rar?dl=0 .

Here is a screenshot of the warning I get after force flashing a BIOS that doesn't have my serial number etc: https://www.dropbox.com/s/5urk2xxe4ld5a5...5.jpg?dl=0 . This is the BIOS Menu Information tab(I think): https://www.dropbox.com/s/7dh8uoa3ozcj5q...7.jpg?dl=0 .

If I force flash the original dump I linked to earlier I don't get the "Product Information not valid" warning, so I guess if you could edit any BIOS dump that would be the ideal one.

I would know why You get "Product Information not valid" as into your Information Tab
the Serial is deleted !
What kind of flashing Bios have You tried ?
Let me know

Thanks for that BDMaster. Unfortunately when I flash that BIOS to the SPI chip the system no longer boots. The power buttons LEDs come on, the Wi-Fi LED is orange and the screen stays off. If I flash back the original F.21 from HP's site it boots up fine.

Does the BIOS try to verify itself when it boots?

Edit: And thanks for the recommendation of HP DMIEdit!

Thanks for that BDMaster, I look forward to trying your next BIOS. If it's any help, I went back from F.21 to the original BIOS release for this laptop ( F.02 - ftp://hp.com/ftp1/pub/softpaq/sp47001-47500/sp47252.exe ) and I was able to sucesfully flash it. I do not think this BIOS is RSA signed.

After flashing it I started the laptop up and it showed the HP logo but quickly restarted. It then proceeded to boot up normally. I was excited to see it boot a modified BIOS but when I tried a different Wi-Fi card that I added the PCI ID for it refused to boot. I found this strange so I used the USB programmer to dump the BIOS and it was the unmodified F.02 BIOS!

I thought I must of flashed the wrong BIOS, so I used the USB programmer again to flash F.02 and after flashing the SPI chip (and before turning the laptop on), I disconnected the USB programmer, then reconnected it and forced it to read the chip again. It dumped the modified BIOS successfully.

I then turned the computer on, it started briefly before rebooting and continuing to load Windows. I shut it down and re-read the BIOS with the programmer and again the unmodified F.02 BIOS was on the chip! I don't know how but it seems this old BIOS can tell it was modified and then reflash the unmodified BIOS. It's more annoying than the brick I get with the RSA BIOS.

Thanks again for the help and hopefully the older BIOS can help you in patching the BIOS verification measures. Just to clarify, are these measures similar to what donovan6000 discussed here: http://donovan6000.blogspot.com.au/2014/...-bios.html ?
