can try to replace microcode ....but it can not guarantee success ....it is possible that your motherboard is not soldered need power transistors or capacitors....

Unfortunately it's in german, but chrome translate does well its job in this case ( I don't understand german, but the general meaning it's clear ).
It's a thread about sandy bridge quad upgrade ( which is feasible without any bios/software change ) and faster ddr3 ram, but there're also a lot of posts about ivy bridge.
Long story short, there is a t420 bios mod modified with ivy microcode instructions, but due to the high risk of failure of the operation nobody has tried the trick yet.
