P5LP-LE (Leonite2) and Radeon HD 5770
#1
Hi,

Im not sure if this is BIOS related problem at all, but I have HP's computer model a6228.sc and I recently bought a new graphics card (Radeon HD 5770) because my old one (Geforce 8400 GS) broke up.

But when I installed the new card and tried to power on my comp, monitor didn't get signal (black screen). I asked from forums and they said I should update my power supply which I did, but the problem remained. Computer starts, all fans work fine, but screen is black.

I googled if people had similar problems and seems that the problem is my motherboard (P5LP-LE Leonite2), which doesnt support newer graphic cards. I tried to update BIOS, but because its HP's OEM motherboard, the newest BIOS update is 4 years old.

Then I found this forum and thought I would ask help here. So what you think, is this BIOS related problem and could it be fixed?

Here is a topic related to this problem.
"If talking about PCI-E compatibility v.2.0 is alegedly still backwards compatible with v1.0a which is the version your MB was designed with. But if you look on the other user forums not all MBs are able to run PCI-E 2.0 cards and with 2.1 it is even more problematic."

I also have the exact same problem. I have a m7287c HP desktop computer that has the same mobo as you. I had an 8600gt which used pci-e and it runs just fine, but when i tried out my 5770 nothing comes up. No beeps, fan is blowing, and I currently have a 500W psu and nothing seems to work.. I took the card and put it in my custom built rig and the card runs just fine there, so its not a faulty card... I've read several forums about this issue and they're saying that the mobo only supports up to 512mb of video memory (wierd)... Undecided

the problem is you need a more powerful & specific PSU (a 600 watt psu recommended) w/ a 6-pin PCIe connector for the radeon hd 5770:
https://www.amd.com/en-us/products/graph.../5000/5770

Quote:System requirements and recommendations:
  • PCI Express® based PC is required with one X16 lane graphics slot available on the motherboard
  • 450 Watt or greater power supply with one 75W 6-pin PCI Express® power connectors recommended (600 Watt and two 6-pin connectors for AMD CrossFireX™ technology in dual mode)
  • Certified power supplies are recommended.  Refer to http://support.amd.com/en-us/recommended/power-supplies for a list of Certified products
  • Minimum 1GB of system memory
  • Installation software requires CD-ROM drive
  • DVD playback requires DVD drive
  • Blu-ray™ playback requires Blu-ray drive
  • For an AMD CrossFireX™ system, a second ATI Radeon™ HD 5770 graphics card, an AMD CrossFireX™  Ready motherboard and one AMD CrossFireX™  Bridge Interconnect cable per graphics card (included) are required

a relatively "unknown" 500 watt PSU may not be enough.  also need to get a high quality brand PSU from Corsair, Seasonic, ThermalTake, etc.
