How? where tf you live where they are so cheap? Here in the US an E3 1270 v2 is still $80+.

AliExpress. If customs realise what it is it'll be more like €80 when tax is paid although the seller said they'd declare the value of the shipment as $10 so hopefully it'll be okay. You're supposed to pay tax in Ireland of 23% on anything imported from outside the EU over 22 or 23 euro.

Just in case anyone is wondering in the future, the Xeon E3-1270 V2 works fine in the Optiplex 3010.

Hey guys new to the forum, i also have a optiplex 3010 i picked up for $20. Were there certain motherboards that wouldn't support the e3 1240v2 or 3770? It came with a pentium G2030 in it which is only a dual core and no HT. Its going to be mainly used as a game server or possibly give to a friend so he can get into pc gaming, i was just wanting to verify before i started upgrading the cpu/ram/psu. Thanks! Edit: It's running BIOS A15 currently

the 3010 has the x77 (H or Q) or x61 (H or Q) chipset which supports ALL Sandy bridge and Ivy bridge CPUs. Update the BIOS to the latest version and you'll be fine.

Thank you! I really appreciate it.

the only way that the 3010 does not support Ivy Bridge is if someone installed the incorrect replacement board from an early Optiplex that uses the Q67 chipset.

As long as your board is Flex ATX (looks like ATX but smaller) and not Shuttle form factor, you should be OK.

For some reason Dell/Foxconn's Q67 boards don't support Ivy Bridge despite Q67 boards existing that do.

Ok it says on the MB next to the socket MIH61R MB, so does that mean it would support a xeon E5-2643v2? im just looking for the best cpu to keep it relevant for a while without spending a big amount. Thank you for your response.

No, you have H61 chipset. You need X79 chipset for E5-2643 v2, and that board is Socket 1155, you need Socket 2011-0 for E5 2643 v2.

You can get cheap Chinese X79 motherboards that are LGA-2011-0.

The chipset might support the CPU, but the socket is different. My cheap Chinese X79 motherboard uses Q77 chipset.
