I dumped it with raspberry pi + pomona clip and flashrom, the command was:

Code:
flashrom -p linux_spi:dev=/dev/spidev0.0 -r chip1.rom

Hello!
You need upload content of 8 Mb chip only, after that flash it back.
Did you connnected AC adapter to Mb during reading process?
Now you can flash new mod using Intel FPT because rewrite protection located in bios image.

No, I didn't have AC connected. I used pin 8 3.3V cable to power the chip. I know it is not ideal, but the ethernet cable WoL thing wasn't working for me.

Sorry, I didn't get the bit about Intel FPT, but I don't have Windows installed on my x230 anyway.
You must give power supply to give hardware make reading process properly.
After that you need upload both dumps if you havent windows.

It says "Never connect both the 8th pin and the AC adapter at the same time" here

I have done mod for this laptop in past, most users need desold chips and use more expensive programmer like TSL866a

This is strange. I am trying with different versions of flashrom and I keep getting identical dumps. The process seems very smooth. Why do you think the dump is "bad"?
